jumanji is a 1997 American fantasy adventure film directed by Joe Johnston, produced by David Kirschner and Stacey Sher, written by Chris Van Allsburg with a screenplay by Peter Farrelly and Jim Wiethe. The film stars Robin Williams as Alan Parrish, Bonnie Hunt as Sarah Whittle, Jonathan Hyde as Mr. Smiley, Beulah Koale as Ms. Hathaway, with James Coburn in his final role before his death shortly after the filming of the movie. The film tells the story of five children who are transported into an elaborate board game world named Jumanji in 1967 to kill a jungle-based avatar of their adult selves who have been transformed into dangerous beasts for 30 years. The film opened at number one in North America, ahead of the blockbuster film The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and went on to gross $296 million worldwide. It received nominations for several awards including the Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film, Academy Award for Best Original Song (for "When She Loved Me") and Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. Alan Parrish is an American man who moves into an apartment in New York City's West Village sometime in 1967. His neighbor is Billy, a mentally challenged young boy whom Alan befriends. Alan takes him on a series of "adventures" throughout the city, including trying to fly from the top of a building and getting into a gang fight. In both cases, he is quickly arrested by police officers who become suspicious of Alison's intentions with the boy. The apartment is owned by Mr. Smiley, a man with a gray mustache who does not speak much and gives Alan the apartment due to his work as a toy designer. One day, Alan finds a board game called "Jumanji", left in his apartment by Mr. Smiley; he decides to leave it out for Billy to find. Billy opens the box, only to have the board game's adult version come to life and tell him that he is now in control. The adult Alan then punches Billy and sends him falling into a nearby creek. Alan encounters a hunter named Van Pelt and attacks him, revealing himself to be an adult and transforming into a lion-like creature (a manifestation of "Alan the Hunter"). Alan's transformation causes Van Pelt to call for backup; one cop stays behind to hunt Alan while the other drives off with Billy. Alan gives chase on foot, climbing up several buildings until he makes it onto a construction crane. He jumps onto the back of one of the pursuing police cars and tears it apart while attempting to get inside. With no other option, Alan ends up going back to the apartment and hiding inside a chest that has been kept there for years. He discovers Billy is still inside the chest as well as the board game, which he has fallen into disrepair. After Alan falls asleep, he awakes to find that his adult self has become trapped in the board game as well. The two travel through its contents and fight their way out of it. The adult Alan manages to free himself and tries to shoot at the other Alan, only for it to not hurt him at all; this is due to a bulletproof vest he wore earlier in his life.
